The GNOME developers are hard at work these days preparing to unleash the Release Candidate (RC) build of the anticipated GNOME 3.18 open-source desktop environment for GNU/Linux operating systems.

As part of this last milestone in the development cycle of GNOME 3.18, several core components and applications received significant improvements, such as the powerful Evolution email, calendar, and groupware client.

According to the internal release notes, which we've attached at the end of the article for reference, Evolution 3.18 Release Candidate (3.17.92) is here to add several new features, as well as to fix many bugs reported by users since the last Beta release.

Among these changes, we can mention the addition of an application menu, fixes for a runtime warning that occurred when the Delete button was pressed at the end of a paragraph, and support for avoiding vertical scrolling in the filtering rules editor dialog.

Some build changes were applied for Windows platforms, the ECanvas cursor positioning routine has been extended, a crash with the e_mail_reader_destroy_menu_idle_cb() function has been patched, and there's no wrapping around Unicode's non-breaking space character.

EHTMLEditor received multiple improvements

In addition to the changes mentioned above, the EHTMLEditor component of the Evolution email client received multiple improvements, especially for EHTMLEditorSelection, EHTMLEditorUtils, and EHTMLEditorView. The Slovak, Polish, Portuguese, Galician, Hungarian, Spanish, Kazak, German, Lithuanian, Norwegian Bokmal, French, Slovenian, and Turkish translations have been updated.

Evolution 3.18 RC (Release Candidate) will be distributed as part of the GNOME 3.18 RC build, due for release tomorrow, September 16. The final release of the GNOME 3.18 desktop enviroment will be available next week, on September 23, 2015, and it will include the Evolution 3.18 groupware client. In the meantime, you can download the Evolution 3.18 RC sources right now from Softpedia, but keep in mind that it's a pre-release version, not suitable for production use.
