14 DAY TRIAL // The GNOME developers are hard at work these days preparing for the last milestone towards the GNOME 3.18 desktop environment, the RC (Release Candidate) build, due for release on September 16, 2015.
As part of this development build, numerous GNOME core components and applications received updates, which include bugfixes and new features. The Cheese open-source webcam viewer app reached version 3.18 RC earlier.
According to the internal changelog, which we've attached at the end of the article for reference, Cheese 3.18 Release Candidate can maintain the aspect ratio when the preview window is resized by setting the content-gravity on the preview actor to CLUTTER_CONTENT_GRAVITY_RESIZE_ASPECT.
Moreover, a runtime warning and a warning on exit have been fixed in the libcheese library, a crash that occurred when generating the default CheeseWidget has been addressed, and there's now support for a default CheeseCamera device.
"Update the device argument to cheese_camera_new() to reflect the new use of GstDeviceMonitor, by renaming the device_node argument to name. Emit a critical warning if passing a name, as creating a device by name is not yet supported," reads the announcement.
Will be distributed as part of GNOME 3.18
Last but not least, the Czech, German, Greek, Finnish, French, Galician, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Lithuanian, Norwegian Bokmal, Turkish, Farsi, Indonesian, Kazakh, and Icelandic language translations have been updated.
You can download the Cheese 3.18 RC (Release Candidate) build right now from Softpedia, but please try to keep in mind that this is a pre-release version, which means that it contains unresolved issues and it is not suitable for production use.
