GitLab 8.0 will be arriving on September 22

GitLab, the best alternative you'll find to GitHub and Bitbucket, has announced a $4 million / €3.5 million Series A funding round from Khosla Ventures.

This news comes after the company has previously announced it raised $1.5 million / €1.35 million in seed funding back in July, in a round that included investors like Khosla Ventures, 500 Startups, Crunchfund, Sound Ventures (Ashton Kutcher), and Liquid 2 Ventures (Joe Montana).

GitLab, the open source version of GitHub you'll never get

GitLab is a powerful Git-based source code hosting and version control system, which closely resembles GitHub. The project is managed by GitLab Inc., who offers GitLab as three separate products.

There's the SaaS version of GitLab, a hosted version of the application, just like GitHub. Then there's GitLab Community Edition, an open source self-hosted version of the SaaS offering. And there's GitLab Enterprise Edition, another self-hosted version, but with extended support from the GitLab developers.

These tools have slowly carved their own niche in the source code hosting market, and GitLab has slowly amassed quite a considerable portfolio which now includes companies like NASA, CERN, Alibaba, SpaceX, O’Reilly, IBM, Expedia, AVG, and Red Hat.

“GitLab differentiates itself from other collaborative Git platforms because we are open source - and always have been," said Sytse “Sid” Sijbrandij, CEO and co-founder of GitLab. “Our users choose GitLab because they can run it on their own servers, the source code is open and adaptable, and organizations can build on top of GitLab.”

GitLab 8.0 to be released on September 22

Along with the Series A funding announcement, GitLab's developers also revealed that on September 22, they intend to launch GitLab 8.0.

This new version will use 50% less disk space, comes with an improved interface, faster merging operations, Continuous Integration (CI) with GitLab itself, and a 'Reply by email' commenting feature.

GitLab Community Edition can be downloaded from Softpedia, GitLab itself, or from GitHub.
