Gears of War developer The Coalition confirms that Gears of War 2 and 3 might arrive on the Xbox One through the new backwards compatibility feature for the new console and emphasizes that it would have been unfeasible to make a proper Gears of War Collection due to the huge amount of time required.

The Gears of War saga brought tens of millions of people to the Xbox 360 platform throughout the years and now that the franchise is owned by Microsoft and worked on by The Coalition, not one but two different titles are coming to the Xbox One.

While Gears of War 4 is the most important, seeing as how it's an all-new title, fans are also looking forward to Gears of War Ultimate Edition, which is a remastered version of the original title.

A Gears Collection required a huge amount of time

While talking at the Gears of War San Diego Comic-Con panel, The Coalition confirms, via DualShockers, that, even if fans wanted a Gears of War Collection for the Xbox One, in the same vein as Halo: The Master Chief Collection, it would have required a huge amount of time.

Even Gears of War 1 required around 18 months to completely remaster for the Xbox One, so adding two more titles would've meant a delay for Gears of War 4.

However, the studio mentions that it's looking into the possibility of Gears of War 2 and 3 being playable on the Xbox One via the upcoming backwards compatibility feature. The long-awaited mechanic allows the new console to play older Xbox 360 titles. However, an effort is required from Microsoft and its resources are limited.

The Coalition also mentions that the upcoming Ultimate edition is a learning tool for its developers, so that they can come to grips with the Xbox One and ensure that Gears 4 doesn’t run into any problems.

Gears of War Ultimate is set to launch on August 25 for Xbox One and PC.
