The development team at FreeStyleGames and publisher Activision are aiming to establish the rock credentials of the coming Guitar Hero Live, and a new video ad for the music title features both well-known musician Lenny Kravitz, who has recently been in the news because of a major wardrobe malfunction, and actor James Franco.

The spot is created under the direction of Jonathan Krisel, who has worked on both Saturday Night Live and Portlandia, and shows the two celebrities competing in order to win over the crowd in the main mode of the game.

Guitar Hero Live allows players to join a number of real bands to play their hits in front of crowds that react as naturally as possible to their performance in order to give gamers instant feedback on how well they are handling their instruments.

Both Lenny Kravitz and James Franco fans are clearly up to have some fun with the music game, but for actual gamers, the process will involve a longer learning curve, especially given that the title comes complete with a new guitar controller.

The redesign is needed in order to make it easier for players to use the new mechanics of Guitar Hero Live.

The game also offers a 24-hour, non-stop set of music channels

The game is also introducing an entirely new Guitar Hero Live TV mode, which basically features videos from a wide variety of bands, covering plenty of genres.

Gamers will be able to simply watch them, select the one they like and then simply jump in, either alone or with friends, in order to play the part that they are interested in.

Guitar Hero Live will be offered on October 20 in North America and three days later in Europe, and can be played on the PlayStation 4, the Xbox One, the Wii U, with lesser versions being offered for older home consoles and iOS-powered devices.

The game will have to compete with Rock Band 4, which comes on October 6, with Harmonix more focused on making sure that older content and instruments are compatible with the new launch, which also comes with a range of new gameplay features.
