Now with the Cinnamon desktop environment

We reported earlier on the release of the February Beta of Apricity OS, an Arch Linux-based operating system for computers and laptops, and now we're back with an exclusive first look at the new Apricity OS Cinnamon Edition.

Skilled Apricity OS developer Alex Gajewski was more than happy to give Softpedia the pleasure of taking an exclusive first look at his new Cinnamon edition for Apricity OS, and how can you refuse such an opportunity. "I haven't announced the release yet, so you have an exclusive first look at the Cinnamon edition," said Alex Gajewski in an email sent to Softpedia.

So we took the Apricity OS Cinnamon Edition operating system for a quick test drive to see what goodies it brings, and we can tell you that we like it so far, but first we should inform our readers that because of its Arch Linux base, the distribution already has the newest GNU/Linux technologies, such as the latest, long-term supported Linux 4.4.1 kernel, systemd 229 init system, as well as all the security patches released upstream.

Besides, users will get all the great applications, handy tools and system tweaks that are already present in the standard Apricity OS edition, which is built around the latest stable GNOME desktop environment, on top of a highly customized Cinnamon desktop environment that works out of the box and has everything one needs to get started on his daily tasks.

Preinstalled apps, conclusions

Among the preinstalled apps in the new Apricity OS Cinnamon Edition, we can notice Steam for Linux, PlayOnLinux, Google Chrome web browser, Rhythmbox music player, Totem (Videos) video player, GNOME Calendar, LibreOffice office suite, Filezilla FTP client, Transmission torrent downloader, Syncthing GTK BitTorrent Sync alternative, InkScape vector graphics editor, GIMP image editor, and GNOME Photos.

So, as you can see, there are a lot of apps from the GNOME Stack, which are also present in the Apricity OS GNOME Edition. We recommend taking look at the gallery attached below so you can see what Apricity OS Cinnamon Edition looks like, but we can tell you right now that you'll get a pretty standard Cinnamon experience with the Apricity OS' Material Design look and feel.

As expected, the brand-new Calamares 2.0 graphical installer will make installing the Arch Linux-based operating system a breeze for newcomers who want to brag to their friends that they're running Arch on their computers. For a Beta, it runs quite well, and we didn't encounter any issues during our tests, but you can decide that for yourselves by grabbing the Apricity OS Cinnamon Edition 02.2016 Beta Live ISOs.
