FFmpeg, a complete solution to record, convert and stream audio and video, has received its first update for the 2.8 branch and is now ready for download.

The 2.8 branch of FFMpeg has been released one month ago, and its developers have been quick to push out the door the first update for it. It's only a maintenance-related release, so nothing major is happening right now. In any case, it looks like FFmpeg is getting a lot of exposure these days, and the latest versions of the framework are now being recommended for various apps. In fact, many of the applications that make use of FFmpeg have already released new versions that support it.

What's new in FFmpeg 2.8.1 "Feynman"

"2.8.1 was released on 2015-10-14. It is the latest stable FFmpeg release from the 2.8 release branch, which was cut from master on 2015-09-05. Amongst lots of other changes, it includes all changes from ffmpeg-mt, libav master of 2015-08-28, libav 11 as of 2015-08-28," is noted on the official website.

The following packages have been upgraded and are now available: libavutil, libavcodec, libavformat, libavdevice, libavfilter, libavresample, libswscale, libswresample, and libpostproc. FFmpeg is the leading multimedia framework able to decode, encode, transcode, mux, demux, stream, filter, and play virtually any media that humans and machines have created.

A complete list of updates, features, and other fixes can be found in the official announcement. The source package for FFmpeg can be downloaded from Softpedia, but this is just the source. You will need to compile it yourself, although it would be a better idea to wait until it hits the repositories, which is always the best option. It's also worth pointing out that Ubuntu recently switched to FFmpeg. Moreover, the discussion that determined the leader of the project to step down seems to have stopped, at least for now.
