Proteus is a powerful laptop from Entroware that ships only with Ubuntu and Ubuntu MATE. Its makers have just announced that they are now equipping the Proteus model with a video card at no extra cost for new users.

Entroware is one of the few companies offering a Linux distro by default, and Proteus is the most powerful laptop you can get from them. It's been around for some time, and you can get either Ubuntu 15.04 or Ubuntu MATE 15.04 with it. Now the guys from Entroware have decided to add a video card, an Nvidia GTX 960M with 2GB of RAM, and new users won't have to pay anything extra.

"With a base price of £629, a 1080p screen and backlit keyboard, the Proteus is our flagship Ubuntu laptop. With a dedicated Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M chip, Entroware recommends Proteus for playing through your Linux Steam library," reads the entry on the Entroware website.

What are the hardware specs for Proteus

Users might notice that Entroware mentions the Steam library, and that means Linux gamers are targeted with this laptop. It also means that the laptop also needs to have some pretty good hardware to make it happen.

The default version comes with an Intel Core i3 4100M 2.5GHz processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 500 GB HDD, but that can be upgraded significantly. The best processor you can get with Proteus is an Intel Core i7 4910MQ at 2.9GHz. This will raise the price of the laptop accordingly.

The previous model had a dedicated Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M card, so it wasn't exactly a slow video card. If you order Proteus now, you'll notice that the new video card has been made available and the price has remained the same.

It's also worth noting that once a new version of Ubuntu and Ubuntu MATE are released in October, 15.10, users will be free to upgrade.
