Some new features have landed in the distro

elementary OS Freya has been around for a while now, but that is not stopping its developers to keep pushing new features and fixes all the time. The latest improvements have landed for the Greeter and Desktop.

elementary OS Freya is one of the few distros out there that continued to get new features after the official launch has been made. Most development teams prefer to maintain what's been implemented already, but it's different for elementary. This is not the first round of upgrades, and it's definitely not the last one.

It might not seem like a big deal, just a few fixes here and there, but when you're doing this kind of work over many months, it accumulates. So many things have been changed since the initial release of elementary OS Freya back in April, that it's even difficult to name them all. Some of the more important ones are new keyboard shortcuts, a new open file dialog, and lots of fixes and improvements for the file manager.

The Greeter and the Desktop get some special attention

The Greeter for elementary OS Freya was already pretty cool, but some changes have been made to it. Also, the dock is much better at hiding when a window gets near it, and a few other improvements have landed as well.

"A new update to the Greeter brings Gtk.CSS styled avatars. This allows us to add some nice borders, highlights, and shadows and we’ve taken a moment to make the text entries a little more legible. Plus things are just lined up a little nicer. Desktop settings sees a pretty minor update, bringing an option for a new dock hide mode code named “window dodge”. This mode hides the dock any time any window overlaps it, focused or not," wrote Daniel Fore on the official blog.

As usual, you can download elementary OS Freya from Softpedia and give it a spin. Enjoy!
