14 DAY TRIAL // Arne Exton informs us in an email that he managed to release a new update of his Exton|OS computer operating system based on the latest Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) and Debian GNU/Linux 8.1 (Jessie) OSes.
Being based on Ubuntu 15.10, Exton|OS Build 151022 inherits its kernel packages, based on the upstream Linux kernel 4.2.3, but drops the Unity user interface for the more lightweight and customizable MATE desktop environment.
The distribution uses Mr. Exton's kernel 4.2.0-16-exton, which is an optimized version of Ubuntu 15.10's kernel, patched with extra features, such as support for more hardware components. The previous release of the OS used kernel 4.0.0-4-exton.
"With kernel 4.2 there is no real need to use Nvidia proprietary graphic drivers since this kernel has better support for the open-source Nvidia driver Nouveau than any other older kernel," says Arne Exton in an email to Softpedia.
Exton|OS comes with persistence features
Among other interesting features implemented in Exton|OS Build 151022, we can mention persistence support in the ISO image, which means that users can save their live session and continue from where they left off whenever they want, but only if they're using the OS from a USB stick.
Ubiquity, the graphical installer of the Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily Werewolf) operating system has been replaced with Exton|OS Installer, which is a clone of the Debian Live Installer, according to Mr. Exton, and it is now possible to run the entire OS directly from RAM, but only if you have at least 2GB of RAM in your computer.
Last but not least, the MATE desktop environment has been updated to version 1.10.2 and highly customized with a dock located on the bottom edge of the screen and a panel on the upper part.
