The ExpressionEngine CMS has reached version 3.0.0, having gone through a major revamp, especially of its administrative panel, which is now not only sporting a new coat of paint but also mobile-friendly.

After transferring ownership and development operations of the CodeIgniter framework to the British Columbia Institute of Technology, the EllisLab team had the necessary time to focus on ExpressionEngine (EE), the company's flagship product.

After spending a few long years stuck in the 2.x branch, the CMS has now finally reached its next major iteration, version 3.x, which comes with lots of new features, with the most important one being its brand new admin panel.

ExpressionEngine 3.0.0 comes with a new admin panel

While the EE admin panel is now built according to a well-structured visual style guide, following the lead of many similar CMSs that also have their own internal UI rules, EllisLab's CMS is now also mobile-friendly.

The new responsive admin panel helps EE keep up with the times and all other CMS systems that have added mobile support quite a few years back.

Although I have rarely ever heard of anyone managing a website from their phone and this feature has always seemed to be a lot of useless CSS code added to a CMS' core, it came in handy when using tablets, laptops with smaller displays, or when working with split screens on Windows.

Multi-site support is now included in the free version

Of course, other changes have also been made, and one that developers would love is the inclusion of multi-site support in the free version of the ExpressionEngine CMS.

Since forums have trended towards a simpler approach to conversations and overall UIs, the EllisLab team has also decided to include their Discussion Forum module in the EE core, allowing easy creation of bulletin boards via the CMS' Channels feature.

Additionally, following in the steps of WordPress and Drupal, ExpressionEngine 3 now also comes with its own custom, built-in spam detection module.

On top of this, the EE installer and auto-updater are now "simpler, faster, and less error-prone."

You can download the latest version of the ExpressionEngine CMS from EllisLab's website.
