The upcoming reboot of the Doom series is built around reaching a native resolution of 1080p and a framerate of 60fps across all platforms, mostly because they play big roles in the actual gameplay of the first-person shooter, developer id Software explains.

The Doom franchise has been around for a huge amount of time, but recent years haven't exactly been that kind to the series, as internal turmoil at id Software has kept the next iteration from actually making an appearance.

After giving fans a sneak peek at QuakeCon 2014, and then a full-fledged announcement at E3 2015 last month, id Software brought it back to QuakeCon 2015 over the weekend.

Doom wants 1080p and 60fps for the sake of gameplay

Besides showcasing different gameplay demonstrations, the studio also talked with GameSpot about the core goals of the upcoming shooter, which mostly revolve around reaching 1080p resolution and 60fps framerate.

According to Executive Producer Marty Stratton, id Software as a whole wants to be at the forefront of gaming, and with Doom, the team wants to deliver the best looking shooter at 1080p and 60fps. However, these goals aren't just for bragging rights, as they have big roles in the actual gameplay, ensuring a fast, fluid, and gorgeous experience.

"We want our games to run as fast as possible at the highest resolution possible. So for us, that goal is 1080p and 60 FPS. Along with that goal, the mantra of our technology team is that we want to be the best-looking game out there at 60 FPS and 1080p. We really do think it's important to the feel of the game, it's important to the way our combat feels and our movement feels. It's got to be fast, it's got to be fluid. It really is a gameplay goal first and foremost," he says.

While it's clear that Doom is going to reach 1080p and 60fps on PS4 and Xbox One, it's unclear just how id Software will augment the PC version to reach even higher resolutions and framerates, depending on the configuration.

The upcoming title is set to launch in 2016 and will receive a beta in the future.
