The developers of the open-source, free and cross-platform digiKam Software Collection project, an image viewer, organizer and editor application designed specifically for the KDE desktop environment, have announced the release of digiKam 4.14.0.

According to the announcement, digiKam Software Collection 4.14.0 appears to be the last maintenance release of the software's 4.x series, which has been in development for the last two years. The new version is mainly a bugfix release that addresses approximately 20 issues reported by users since the previous version of the software.

Among the changes implemented in digiKam 4.14.0, we can mention support for the OpenCV 3.x software, which is used for face management tasks and various OpenCV algorithm-based tools, usability improvements to the overlay icon, support for resizing icons based on thumbnail sizes, and the addition of a new button for quickly running the slideshow in full-screen mode.

"This release will be the last stable release dedicated from 4.x series. We are now focused on next 5.0.0 release planed on spring 2016. This next main version will support Qt5 and KF5. The first beta1 will be released soon," said the digiKam Team.

First Beta build of digiKam 5.0.0 comes later today

So that's it, digiKam 4.14.0 is the last version of the software that starts with number 4, as from now on, the developers will concentrate their efforts on developing new features for the next major release, digiKam 5.0.0, which will be ported to the Qt 5 and KDE Frameworks 5 technologies.

The official release schedule for digiKam Software Collection 5.0.0 has been published, and we can tell you that the first Beta build should arrive later today, October 18, 2015, followed by a second Beta build on November 29. While the third Beta release will be available for testing near Christmas, on December 20, the fourth Beta comes on January 24, 2016.

The development cycle will then continue with the fifth Beta build, which should see the light of day on February 28, and the sixth and last Beta version on March 27. The final release of digiKam Software Collection 5.0.0 will be unleashed worldwide on April 30, 2016. Until then, you can download digiKam 4.14.0 right now from Softpedia.
