People aren't interested in Facebook as they once used to be

Despite the massive user statistics Facebook was boasting about a few days ago, a recent report shows that the social network is losing user engagement, with fewer and fewer users posting statuses and photos, compared to the same period last year.

The revelation comes via a GlobalWebIndex study that interviewed over 200,000 users from 34 countries, a study that provided a global overview of the social media market.

Facebook is still king among social networking platforms

Facebook released its Q3 results for 2015 a few days ago, and the company was claiming it had over 1.55 billion monthly active users, and over 1 billion active users each day.

These numbers easily placed it at the top of all social networks, beating other competitors like YouTube, which came in second, Google+, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr, Badoo, Vine, Reddit, Viadeo, Sina Weibo, Tencent Weibo, and Yammer.

Facebook also topped the instant messaging chart as well, with Facebook Messenger getting the top spot, followed by the company's other IM client, WhatsApp, and then by Skype, LINE, Viber, Snapchat, Google Hangouts, WeChat, BBM, Kakao Talk, Telegram, Tango, Kik, and Voxer.

Users don't find Facebook as being "cool" anymore

Since Facebook has been the undisputed leader in these markets for quite some time now, the guys at GlobalWebIndex also set out to find out how people were using the social network.

Results weren't quite as good when looking at them compared to last year's numbers, Facebook seeing a big decline in some categories of user engagement, with more and more people proclaiming themselves as "bored of Facebook" and "not cool anymore."

While people are posting fewer status messages and photos on their profiles, the situation is not as bleak because they are, on the other hand, watching more videos and posting more comments.

As for Twitter, another network that the report closely looked at, the results confirm the fact that people are mainly using it to discover news stories, a trend also observed by the company's management, which has taken various steps to reorient the network towards real-time news.
