The Debian Project had the great pleasure of announcing the release and immediate availability for download of new maintenance builds for their stable, long-term supported Debian GNU/Linux 7 and Debian GNU/Linux 8 operating systems.

Debian GNU/Linux 8.2 (Jessie) is the second point release in the Debian GNU/Linux 8 series and promises to bring all sorts of security patches, software updates, as well as to fix numerous issues reported by users since the release of Debian GNU/Linux 8.1 in order to keep the long-term Linux kernel-based operating system reliable and stable at all times.

In numbers, Debian GNU/Linux 8.2 "Jessie" has 61 security updates for some essential packages, including the kernel, 68 updated packages to fix all sort of miscellaneous bugs, and 6 removed packages. The Debian Installer received an important update as well, now supporting Seagate DockStar devices. More details about what exactly has been changed in this release can be found in the official release notes.

"The Debian project is pleased to announce the second update of its stable distribution Debian 8 (codename "jessie"). This update mainly adds corrections for security problems to the stable release, along with a few adjustments for serious problems. Security advisories were published separately and are referenced where applicable," reads the announcement.

All Debian GNU/Linux 8 and 8.1 users must upgrade

As expected, the Debian Project urges all users of the Debian GNU/Linux 8 and Debian GNU/Linux 8.1 operating systems to upgrade their installations to the new 8.2 release of Jessie as soon as possible. All they have to do is to make sure their systems are up to date by running the "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" commands in a Terminal window or use a graphical package manager like Synaptic Package Manager.

Those who want to deploy Debian GNU/Linux 8.2 (Jessie) on new computers or make a fresh install of Debian can download the Installation CDs of Debian right now from Softpedia, supported on 64-bit and 32-bit architectures. Additionally, you can also download the Debian GNU/Linux 8.2 Live CDs with the KDE, GNOME, Cinnamon, MATE, LXDE, and Xfce desktop environments.

Update: We're sorry, but at the moment of writing this article, there are no installation and Live CD ISO images available for download. We will update the article again when they become available.

Update 2: As of September 7, 2015, the Debian GNU/Linux 8.2.0 installation CDs are available for download (see the link above for details). Live CDs will be released in the coming days.
