A Linux-based operating system for schools

The developers of the Debian-based GALPon MiniNo GNU/Linux distribution, which is popularly known as PicarOS, have had the great pleasure of announcing the release of PicarOS Diego 2015.

We haven't heard from the MiniNo PicarOS developers for a year now, since the release of PicarOS Diego 2014 back in October 11, 2014, but it would appear that the team has worked hard to prepare one of the greatest releases of the GNU/Linux operating system used in schools, bringing a great number of goodies for children and teachers alike.

"After several consecutive school years using PicarOS in the classroom, adjusting details, adding suggestions of our colleagues in PicarOS courses, fixing bugs, adding new programs to specific needs, modifying in order to suit a little better our students needs, we are proud to present a new version of PicarOS, with novelties for children, for families and for our teachers colleagues," reads the announcement.

Prominent features of PicarOS Diego 2015 include the addition of new printer drivers, especially for various Konica-Minolta, Ricoh, and Gestetner models, new Wi-Fi drivers, support for new whiteboards, such as StarBoard (Hitachi), Multiclass, Promethean, and SmartBoard, a new System category in the launcher (hidden by default), as well as HDD and USB disk speed notifications.

Moreover, there's now a script called Caracol that lets users make the entire system even more lightweight, the launcher has been updated to support creation of custom PicarOS LiveDVDs with a single mouse click, a data recovery tool has been added, a script that allows you to do some basic system administration tasks has been brought as well, and the Netbook layout has been redesigned.

Better support for laptop batteries

Among other new features implemented in PicarOS Diego 2015, we can mention better support for laptop batteries in the top panel, Timidity synthesizer will no longer be activating during startup, but only when a MIDI program needs it, a tool for updating programs has been added, and the Chanclas applet has received support for YouTube help of various software.

Last but not least, a bunch of new programs and games have been added in the PicarOS Diego 2015 distribution, among which we can mention Lector, Alea, Shirt, Gatino, Kidsudoku, Sudokuki, Mr.Rescue, Prince of Persia, Maze of Galious, Xquest2, Regame, Conecta4, Mixxx, MFC, Play It Slowly, MatPuzzle, and numerous other apps have been updated to their latest version available.
