Mark Zuckerberg's yearly challenge reflects his company's recent interest in AI (Artificial Intelligence) technology

Mark Zuckerberg's New Year resolution is to a build an AI (Artificial Intelligence) assistant to help him in everyday tasks like controlling home appliances, organizing his schedule, and so on.

While most of us set our sights on losing weight or giving up smoking, Zuckerberg is known for choosing some pretty hard to accomplish New Year resolutions with the start of each new year.

For example, Facebook's founder announced he planned to learn to speak Mandarin Chinese at the start of 2014, and by October of that year, he was wowing a Chinese audience during a Q&A session at Tsinghua University in China.

He went with more simple tasks in 2013 when he decided to read two new books every month, and last year, when he announced his plans for meeting and having a meaningful conversation with one new person every day. But don't be fooled, generally, the Facebook owner is known for taking impossible tasks like providing free Internet to the World (Internet.org project), or fighting for equality by giving away 99% of his fortune.

Zuckerberg is setting his sights high in 2016

In a post on his Facebook profile, Zuckerberg has revealed that his personal resolution for 2016 is to build a virtual assistant, driven by AI technology that will help him with everyday tasks.

"My personal challenge for 2016 is to build a simple AI to run my home and help me with my work. You can think of it kind of like Jarvis in Iron Man," Zuckerberg says. "Every challenge has a theme, and this year's theme is invention."

Zuckerberg says he'll start by looking at existing technology, and later move on to teaching it to answer his voice commands, giving it control over his house's music, lights, and temperature.

Later on, he also plans to have the assistant let people inside his house based on facial recognition features, and even integrate it with his baby monitoring system, alerting him if anything is happening in his kid's room.

While he won't be able to have conversations with his assistants at the same level of snarkiness Iron Man has with Jarvis, Zuckerberg has high chances of putting his AI together by the end of the year. This is mainly because Facebook is one of the biggest companies currently investing in AI technology, only recently opening a new office in Paris, France, just for its AI department.
