We reported a few days ago on the Cinnamon 2.8 desktop environment and the massive amount of features it includes, but it looks like the first point release is already available for download.

We also revealed the other day that the leader of the Linux Mint project informed users that Cinnamon 2.8 would be officially unveiled at the end of the week, along with the MATE 1.12 desktop environment.

It appears to us that the Cinnamon developers don't want to release Cinnamon 2.8 just yet because of some unresolved issues that need to be patched before the desktop environment lands in users' computers so that the user experience will be smooth, error-free, and painless.

Therefore, they have introduced Cinnamon 2.8.1, the first maintenance release of the soon-to-be-delivered desktop environment, which, according to the internal changelog, is a bugfix release that adds even more improvements and bugfixes to the already huge changelog of Cinnamon 2.8.

What's new in Cinnamon 2.8.1

Among the most significant changes implemented in Cinnamon 2.8.1, we can mention that the Workspace Switcher applet has been updated to be correctly resized depending on the size of the panel, and support for /usr/lib64 used in RPM-based GNU/Linux distribution has been added to capi.py.

Moreover, the panel launcher applet has received some improvements, there's better support for detecting 32-bit (i386) platforms in the capi.py file, as well as the ability to scan all relevant paths, some pep8 changes are also present, a potential NameError has been fixed, and an exception handler has been added.

Of course, there are many other minor changes implemented in Cinnamon 2.8.1, so we recommend that you read the changelog attached below if you're curious to know what exactly has been changed. In the meantime, you can download Cinnamon 2.8.1 right now from Softpedia.
