14 DAY TRIAL // Today, January 13, 2016, Ben Howard of Canonical's Cloud Image team has been proud to announce that, starting with the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) release, they will provide Vagrant cloud images as well.
Ben Howard's announcement comes one week after Canonical's Jorge O. Castro was proud to inform us that the Ubuntu Linux Vagrant images had passed the 10 million download mark at the beginning of 2016, which means that they're now the most requested feature by Ubuntu Cloud users.
Therefore, they decided to ship Vagrant cloud images along with the other cloud image targets when the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system is released later this spring, on April 21, 2016. The new Vagrant images have been rebuilt to offer users the same experience they would expect in the cloud.
"The Cloud Image team is pleased to announce that starting with 16.04 LTS, the Vagrant Images are now provided with other cloud image targets. These new Vagrant Images have been reworked so that they provide the exact same experience as you would expect on the Cloud, including boot via Cloud-init," said Ben Howard.
Available now as part of the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS daily builds
Ubuntu users who want to get their hands on these new Vagrant cloud images can get them right now from Canonical's daily builds for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus), where they will be developed from now on. Of course, the final builds will be promoted to the stable channel when the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS release becomes official.
If you attempt to test the daily build Vagrant images, please try to keep in mind that they're not ready for production use. Canonical encourages users to report any issues they might find with the cloud images, and file them against the livecd-rootfs package, which will be used for building all their cloud image targets, for all architectures.
