Calligra Words is the word processor component

We reported earlier this year that the Calligra developers started work on porting the KDE's number one open-source office suite to the latest Qt 5 and KDE Frameworks 5 technologies used in the KDE Plasma 5 desktop environment.

Porting the upcoming Calligra 3.0 office suite to the KDE/Qt technologies mentioned above started back in March 2015, when the Calligra 2.9.0 release was pushed to users worldwide.

However, today, one of the Calligra developers brags about the fact that the Calligra Words component of the open-source office suite has been fully ported to the Qt 5 and KDE Frameworks 5 technologies.

"This year, in March 2015, we started the port of Calligra from Qt4/kdelibs4 to Qt5/KF5," says Friedrich Kossebau, a KDE and Calligra developer. "And with further work being done, here we present the next Calligra app that is pure Qt5/KF5-based."

As you can see from the screenshot attached on the right, the Calligra Words word processor looks really nice on top of the latest KDE Plasma 5 desktop environment. The software is currently in Alpha stages of development.

Calligra 3.0 might hit the streets later this year

Calligra Words is just the first of nine core components of the Calligra office suite, which means that the developers have a lot of work ahead of them. Calligra 3.0 might see the light of day later this year as a first official Alpha build, but chances are the port will be finished in Q1 or Q2 2016.

In the meantime, Calligra users can update to today's Calligra 2.9.8 release, which brings a ton of new features and under-the-hood improvements, especially to the Kexi and Krita components. Stay tuned for more details, as we will write an in-depth article on the new features implemented in Calligra 2.9.8 later today.
