Jaroslaw Staniek, one of the developers of the Kexi open-source database creation tool distributed as part of the Calligra office suite for the acclaimed KDE desktop environment, has unveiled details about the development progress of Kexi 3.0.

The current version of Kexi, a Microsoft Access alternative for GNU/Linux operating systems, is 2.9.5, distributed as part of the Calligra 2.9.5 office suite, which also includes the famous Krita 2.9.5 digital painting utility. However, version 3.0 is currently in heavy development and its developers are proud to inform us that the pre-alpha version runs very well and is based on the next-generation KDE Frameworks 5 technologies.

According to Jaroslaw Staniek, during the last three weeks, the Kexi team worked on porting the database creation app to the Qt 5.4 and KDE Frameworks 5.x technologies, and they are happy to report that the most interesting feature of Kexi 3.0 is the tabular view, which now works out of the box, as you can see from the attached screenshot, thanks to the KDb framework.

"Porting for the porting itself would not be an interesting goal. As you see on the picture Kexi 3.0 uses KDE Frameworks 5. With Qt 5.4 it's More compact, faster, closer to mobile devices. And a 1st class citizen called Windows version has to come to reach the wide audience," says Jaroslaw Staniek. "Its tabular view works out of the box thanks a new business apps-oriented KDb framework."

Kexi 3.0 will be distributed as part of Calligra 3.0

As you might have guessed, the final version of Kexi 3.0 will be distributed as part of the upcoming Calligra 3.0 office suite, along with the Krita 3.0 app, due for release sometime at the end of 2015. We strongly recommend reading Jaroslaw Staniek's blog announcement if you are a technical person and want to know more about the technologies used in Kexi 3.0.
