The publisher is not ready to make official announcements

Call of Duty fans are already looking forward to the coming Black Ops 3, but it seems that they might soon also be able to experience older installments in the long-running series on the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 if Activision decides to go ahead with plans for re-mastered versions.

The publisher has not made any sort of decision yet, but Eric Hirshberg, who is the chief executive officer, says that executives are exploring the opportunities that such a move would create.

He tells Game Informer that nostalgia is a great way for players to connect to their favorite franchises and that the new hardware opens up some cool new opportunities.

Hirshberg adds, "We need everybody we can get to make the content we're already committed to for our new games. It's always a matter of finding great people to do that work. I would love to play Modern Warfare 1 or the original Black Ops. There's certainly a deep well there. No announcements, but it's something we talk about and think about a lot."

Sony has found great success with the re-mastered version of The Last of Us on the PlayStation 4, but Microsoft failed to make the most of the Halo: The Master Chief Collection on the Xbox One.

Activision will probably only make an official announcement when it has decided exactly what games need to be remade and how to package them.

Black Ops 3 is pushing the action further into the future

The appeal of the old titles lies in the fact that they stayed somewhat closer to present day than the new titles Sledgehammer Games and Treyarch have and are creating.

Black Ops 3 takes place in 2065, and both the single-player and the multiplayer integrate new technology like energy weapons and robotics.

Some fans of Call of Duty are already complaining that the series is moving into Halo territory and that the features defining it are starting to disappear.

They are the target audience that will be happy to purchase old titles in the franchise again in order to enjoy them with upgraded graphics and gameplay.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will be out on November 6 of this year and can be played on the PC, the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4.
