Video game developer Treyarch and publisher Activision are aiming to make Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 the biggest launch of the year, and the two companies want to make sure that the single-player element of the shooter is as compelling as the multiplayer mode is.

Mark Lamia, the leader of the studio working on the title, says that gamers will be surprised by the narrative and by the manner in which it takes into account both historical elements and the way modern technology can evolve by 2065.

He tells Polygon that "We think people are going to talk about this game. It's an interesting fiction. The subject matter we're going to touch on, you can draw a line from today... or not even draw the line, but talk about the issues of technology and the integration of that into every single part of our lives, and how it just happens, and the unintended consequences and how that could even occur."

The Black Ops continuity has covered events like Vietnam and the Cold War, and with the third title in the trilogy, Treyarch says that it will show how the corruption of man and geopolitical evolution can combine to generate some catastrophic results.

Treyarch goes on to add that it has done a lot of research about the way technology will evolve and wants to show gamers the way their lives might be affected in the near future.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will wrap up stories from the previous two titles

The development team believes that the single player gives them the space to also offer closure to those who have enjoyed the first and second Black Ops experiences.

The studio is also already thinking about the time period that they will explore with the next game it will work on, with the two-year development cycle giving them more time than ever to decide what themes they want to tackle.

Mark Lamia has brushed off suggestions that his team is aiming to deliver a direct competitor to Halo, even if the period explored will move further into the future.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will be out on November 6 and can be played on the PC, the PlayStation 4, the Xbox One and older home consoles.
