Today, March 11, 2016, the popular Calibre eBook reader and converter software sees yet another maintenance release, version 2.53, which brings in a bunch of new features and several other improvements.

The biggest new feature of the Calibre 2.53 release is the implementation of a new tool that promises to let users transform book stylings much more quickly, by using easy-to-create rules. Additionally, the Conversion component has been updated to allow users to come up with rules for transforming book styles during conversions.

"For example, you can create rules to change colors in the book or to double the font size of all text in the book, etc. For details, see https://manual.calibre-ebook.com/edit.html#transforming-css-properties," Calibre developer Kovid Goyal explains in the official announcement.

Two other new features landed in Calibre 2.53, persistence support for the "Hide Toolbars" right-click menu item in the Edit Metadata dialog, and an updated portable installer, which now never launches Calibre during automated installs.

Bug fixes, improved news sources

As with any new maintenance release of Calibre, this one fixes several bugs that have been reported by users of the previous version of the software. From the changelog attached at the end of the article, we can notice that list numbers for popup footnotes can be hidden in the E-book viewer, which now correctly handles < ![CDATA[ escapes.

Furthermore, the DOCX Input feature now ignores the hidden bookmark added by the Microsoft Word 2010 office suite in the documents, the keyboard focus will no longer be lost when merging book records, and spelling correction suggestions are displayed in the Edit Book component when using the context menu key with the mouse cursor.

Last but not least, the Mediapart news source has been improved in Calibre 2.53, which you can download right now from our website for GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows operating systems. Please consult the changelog below for more details about the changes implemented in this release.
