On the first day of 2016, Kovid Goyal had the great pleasure of announcing the release and immediate availability for download of Calibre 2.48.0 for all supported operating systems, including GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows.

According to the release notes, which have been attached at the end of the article, the new features implemented in Calibre 2.48.0 are the addition of a driver for Energy eReader Screenlight, support for converting superscripts and subscripts in DOCX Input, as well as a new option for hiding empty categories in the Tag Browser.

As expected, several bugs reported by users since Calibre 2.47.0 were fixed in this new version. For example, two issues with image compression were patched, one related to deceptive zero byte .bak files that were generated during compression of PNG images inside EPUB files, and the other one linked to some errors with zero-byte images files.

Furthermore, Calibre 2.48.0 also addresses a problem with various icons not supporting themes, and adds right-to-left (RTL) support in the Book Details panel for displaying data when the application's interface language is set to an RTL language, such as Arabic or Hebrew.

Several news sources were improved

In addition to the bugfixes mentioned above, Calibre 2.48.0 resolves an issue in the E-book Viewer component, related to the usage of heuristics for the detection of footnote links, allowing the check of vertical-align set to top and bottom, as well as super and sub. More details can be found in the changelog below and on the project's website.

Last but not least, the New York Times Book Review, Reader's Digest, Financial Times, Rzeczpospolita, New Scientist, More Intelligent Life, and der Standard news sources were improved.
