Apple is counting on its partners to deliver curved OLEDs

Rumors about Apple releasing an iPhone with a flexible display have been going around since before the advent of the iPhone 6.

At some point, a video leaked out showcasing an iPhone with a curved, flexible glass panel. But as we all know, the iPhone 6 turned out to be a “regular” phone.

However, as a new report coming out of Business Korea indicates, it seems that Apple hasn’t abandoned plans for such an iPhone. It’s just going to make it on the market a bit later than expected.

According to sources inside the supply chain, Apple is apparently considering transferring its flagship product lineup to one taking advantage of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays in order to solve existing issues with color saturation and accuracy.

At the moment, Apple uses such OLED panels provided by LG Display and Samsung only on the Apple Watch, but in the future things might change.

Will we see a curved iPhone in 2018? We might

Due to implementation problems, Apple has to wait for its partners to fix the underlying issues before it can put OLED displays on its next-gen iPhone. And according to the current report, it might take up to 3 years before the flexible screens are ready for prime time.

The insider source says that a flexible iPhone would blow the minds of mobile enthusiasts away, as Apple hasn’t used this technology in its phone lineup before. It would certainly constitute a big change from the usual models Cupertino is currently selling.

But you should be taking this information with a big grain of salt, because this particular rumor is basically trying to predict the future of the company three years from now. And a lot of things might change during this period, so let’s just remain skeptical of the timeline offered here.

For the time being, Apple is prepping the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, two models that are poised to arrive with better resolutions (or maybe not), a new A9 processor, 2GB of RAM and iOS 9 out of the box.

The phones should also be sturdier, employing the help of the same 7000 series aluminum used in the production of the Apple Watch Sport, which should prevent us from seeing another #bendgate scandal.
