The developers of the well-known BusyBox software, a collection of command-line tools for system administration tasks used under GNU/Linux operating systems, have announced the release of BusyBox 1.24.0.

According to the internal changelog (attached at the end of the article), BusyBox 1.24.0 is a major release that adds a great number of new features and fixes many of those annoying bugs reported by users since the previous version of the software.

Among some of the most important changes, we can mention support for gzip compression levels 4-9, optional support for status=noxfer/none, the ability to start DNS labels with a number, as well as cscope target fixes.

BusyBox has been switched to the POSIX utmpx API (Application Programming Interface), the "-k /path/to/skel" option was added to the adduser command, and the path to configuration files will no longer be hardcoded for the iproute command.

Moreover, it is now possible to install individual binaries in applets, support for !CONFIG_MULTIUSER has been enabled in libbb, uevent received a new applet, logging has been fixed in acpid, and .Z archives are now automatically detected.

Less and ASH received numerous improvements

BusyBox 1.24.0 also includes changes to the Less command, such as correct display of line numbers, numeric input improvements, the addition of a function to detect when the display is at the end of the file, and support for using the last column of a terminal.

The ASH command has been improved as well in this major release of BusyBox, along with the chown, mount, fbset, ubiattach, free, ifupdown, find, tar, umount, unzip, route, tc, vi, wget, mdev, modprobe, modinfo, ipaddress, dpkg, diff, depmod, and deluser comamnds.
