14 DAY TRIAL // Ariel Winter is the 17-year-old actress you probably know from the hit comedy series “Modern Family.” She’s also famous for her impressive curves, specifically for her 32F-cup breasts, which have gotten plenty of attention in the tabloid media.
Because her cleavage was distracting from her work, she decided to have breast reduction surgery and went under the knife on June 4. Ariel is now a 34D-cup and she’s never been happier than she is now, she tells Glamour magazine in a new interview.
She was uncomfortable, felt more objectified
When she decided to go under the knife to get a smaller bust, Ariel didn’t tell anyone except her family and a few close friends, including her co-stars on the sitcom. She didn’t want the world to know in advance, but she imagined the day would come when she’d have to come clean with the public: after all, she knew there would be no denying the difference in cup size.
She was prepared for that: anything to feel less uncomfortable in her own skin, less insecure, less objectified in the press.
Ariel developed “overnight” (her words) when she was 15. Puberty is tough on most people, but it was more so for her because she was doing the growing up part in the public eye. So here she was suddenly, a 15-year-old girl with huge breasts, walking red carpets and literally putting herself under the microscope, for the world to dissect.
She wasn’t ok in her own skin and the fact that the media kept talking about her figure instead of her work only made it worse.
“It made me feel really uncomfortable, because as women in the industry, we are totally oversexualized and treated like objects,” she tells the magazine. “Every article that has to do with me on a red carpet had to do with ‘Ariel Winter's Crazy Cleavage!’ or ‘Ariel Winter Shows Huge Boobs at an Event!’ That's all people would recognize me by - not, ‘Oh, she does great work on Modern Family’.”
That wasn’t all either: Ariel also suffered a great deal because she was being bullied on social media. As she puts it, whenever she’d post a photo of herself, she’d get plenty of comments calling her “fat” and “disgusting,” and things got so bad she started believing them herself.
Why speak up now?
Ariel is candid when it comes to saying why she’s speaking up now. First of all, she didn’t want to give the tabloids the chance to speculate on the difference in cup size, because that would mean they’d continue drawing attention to her figure and away from her work.
Secondly, she’s happy with the choice she made and she hopes her words could reach other girls in her position. She went under the knife to improve her health and her self-esteem, and is the happiest she’s ever been. Maybe her story can help others see that this is also a good option for them.
