Apple is believed to be planning to launch the iPhone 7 lineup a little bit sooner than expected, moving the release date from fall to summer, but the company’s also working on its long-term strategy, trying to think ahead every single move that it makes for its product lineup.

In 2018, for instance, Apple’s planning the switch to OLED displays, which will definitely be a major upgrade for iPhone after so much time with LCD.

A report coming from Japanese publication Nikkei reveals that Apple’s already discussing with LG Display a possible collaboration on OLED displays, as the company wants the 2018 iPhone to be the first model to feature such technology.

It appears that LG plans to open a new Korean factory that would be specifically in charge of building OLED displays for iPhones, but for the moment, there’s no evidence that this new facility could be used exclusively for Apple devices.

Samsung could ship OLED displays too

The aforementioned source also claims that Apple doesn’t see LG as the unique provider of OLED screens for iPhones, and Samsung could very well join the talks as well, mostly because the company doesn’t think that just one supplier is enough to cope with demand for new smartphones.

Some pundits claim that, depending on how negotiations for the OLED technology go, Apple could very well offer both OLED and LCD iPhones, but as AppleInsider notes, this is very unlikely, given the fact that the fruity-named company has always tried to maintain consistency in its phone lineup.

At the moment, Apple has just a single device that comes with an OLED display, and this is the Apple Watch, but the company is yet to step away from LCD technology for iPhones.

As always, it’s too early to get details from Apple regarding the 2018 generation of iPhones, but more information should be provided as we get closer to the unveiling of the upcoming model.
