Rumors swirling around claim that Apple’s working to expand the iPhone lineup with new models, and now a new report says that the company will actually take the wraps off a cheaper version in January.

Since it’s supposed to be more affordable than the existing models, the upcoming iPhone will be called 6c, a report published by GforGames and citing Chinese site TechWeb notes. Basically, the iPhone 6c will follow the same approach as the 5c, but this time, Apple is looking to keep some of the premium features available on the more expensive models, including the TouchID fingerprint sensor.

And yet, in order to reduce the price as much as possible, Apple will remove certain features, such as the 3D Touch, as it’s reportedly planning to make the iPhone 6c available for as low as $400 to $500 (€375 to €470).

Metal case

But what’s more important is that the iPhone 6c will set itself apart from the rest of the lineup with a metal case, which, according to the aforementioned sources, will be painted in several colors, just like the 5c predecessor. The “c” tag could stand for colored, and not for cheap, as some might be tempted to believe.

If the report is true, then the iPhone 6c could arrive a lot sooner than expected, as the company is reportedly planning to unveil the new model in January and make it available for purchase in February.

Obviously, it’s hard to tell right now if the information on this new project is accurate, given the whole secrecy that Apple has become famous for, but if it is, 2016 is going to be a really busy year for Apple. Cupertino is also expected to launch the new iPhone 7 lineup sometime during the summer, as well as the second-generation Apple Watch in the spring.
