The headphones won’t even have a wire between them

iPhone 7 could give up on the traditional headphone jack and instead go all in on the Lightning port, a move that’s already drawing criticism from users across the world.

But it appears that Apple is very serious about this change, and a new report claims that the company is already working on a new set of headphones manufactured by Beats that would be completely wireless, meaning that they won’t even have a cable connecting the two earpieces.

9to5mac says the design will be very similar to the Motorola Hint and the Bragi Dash, with the latter also coming with a button on the earpiece to answer calls.

It’s not yet clear if Apple is aiming for a similar approach, but if it does, the company could rely on Bluetooth to connect them while also offering at least one button to quickly answer/end calls and access Siri.

Premium price

The same report claims that this won’t be the standard headphones offered with the iPhone 7, but most likely sold separately, as they’ll probably have a premium price of at least a few hundred dollars. And more importantly, Apple’s still working on their design, so they might not be available when the new iPhone launches this year and might only arrive at a later date.

Rumor has it that Apple’s preparing a special charging case that will let you carry the headphones around and charge them at the same time. This allows for a battery life of approximately 4 hours per charge, the source says, but it appears that Apple isn’t entirely satisfied with this performance, and this is one of the reasons the headphones might not be ready for the iPhone 7 launch.

Most likely, the main headset coming with the iPhone 7 will use a Lightning connector or will be wireless, with pricing to be different, depending on the version the customers choose.

The device is expected to launch in the summer, so more information is expected to land in the coming months, especially because Apple could also drop some hints as to what headphones it could use on the next-generation when it unveils the iPhone 6c in March.
