The new version would be specifically aimed at tablets

The next-generation iPhone is expected to come with the very same 3D Touch system that’s currently available on the 6s and 6s Plus, but Apple is planning to develop a new version of this technology after the future model sees daylight, according to a new report.

The main reason for developing a second iteration of 3D Touch is support for bigger screens, as right now, the version currently available on the iPhone cannot be used on the iPad, Apple Insider writes.

In other words, 3D Touch is for the moment limited to screens of 5.5 inches, so an upgraded version would allow for bigger displays, including those that are being used on iPad tablets.

Work to start after iPhone 7

While these details shouldn’t be taken for granted right now, the aforementioned source claims Apple is planning to start work on this new 3D Touch system after the next-generation iPhone sees daylight.

According to people close to the matter, iPhone 7 should launch in mid-2016, as Apple might be looking to move the traditional fall press conference to an earlier date. Again, such information is not yet confirmed, but the iPhone 7 is slated to arrive earlier than the other models with the same 3D Touch system as the existing models.

The 3D Touch, which we described in detail in our iPhone 6s Plus review, allows users to quickly access features from the phone’s home screen without the need to open apps. For example, the Mail app allows you to create a new email or search the inbox, while third-party apps such as Waze provide you with a shortcut to navigate to home or work and to search for an address instantly.

This feature debuted on the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus in September and will continue to be offered in the exact same version on the next iPhone too.
