The new device could launch in March this year

Apple is working on a 4-inch iPhone to expand its phone lineup with a smaller and more affordable model, and according to a new report, production of this device has just started.

Japanese newspaper Nikkei has revealed (via AI) that Apple has recently started mass production of the smaller iPhone, ahead of the official launch expected to take place in March.

What’s interesting, however, is that the aforementioned source calls this model iPhone 6c whereas others previously referred to this version as iPhone 5se. There’s no information as to what name Apple plans to use for the new iPhone, but the 6c designation simply makes more sense, as it could make the device feel fresh and keep up with the new-generation devices.

Possible specs

While nothing has been confirmed so far, people with knowledge of the matter said that the 4-inch iPhone could come with the same A9 and M9 processors available in the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, as Apple wants to avoid making the device feel outdated, especially when the new-generation iPhone 7 launches in September.

On the other hand, there are some rumors that the device could actually feature the old A8 + M8 combo, but this is very unlikely, especially because Apple is releasing more demanding iOS updates, and old hardware might not offer the same seamless performance the company is aiming for.

According to the very same report, the design of the iPhone 6c is ready since early 2015, so it’s very odd that the company hasn’t yet decided on its name. Or if it has, Apple has also done a terrific job of hiding it from the press.

Certainly, everything will be disclosed at the company’s press event that could take place in the week of March 14, when the new device might be presented alongside new Apple Watch models (not the second generation, though) and the iPad Air 3.
