Apple could thus make the switch sooner than expected

The upcoming iPhone 7 is very likely to come with an LCD display, just like the current generation, with people close to the matter previously claiming that the company could make the switch to OLED with the iPhone 8 in 2018.

It appears that this plan has changed, though, with a new report by Japanese newspaper Nikkei (via TechRadar) revealing that the transition from LCD to OLED could be made in 2017.

This means that the iPhone 7s could be the very first model to come with such technology, instead of the iPhone 8, as Apple feels like this is a technology that should arrive on the market faster in order to keep up with flagship Android smartphones already featuring it.

Still very unlikely

But despite the Nikkei report, there’s no doubt that seeing the iPhone 7s launching with an OLED screen is quite a huge stretch, especially because we’re talking about a technology that should debut in approximately one year and a half, and everything could change overnight.

Furthermore, if the iPhone 7 launches with an LCD screen, there are only slight chances to see the 7s debuting with such a breaking change. Since the introduction of the “s” model, Apple tried to stick with an important feature unveiling (such as Siri and 3D Touch), but devices were mostly similar to the core phones, except for some minor upgrades.

So a display switch from the core iPhone 7 to the 7s is unlikely for the time being, but as mentioned, nothing should be taken for granted as Apple could very well change its approach and indeed launch the upgraded model in 2017 with an OLED screen.

Companies such as Samsung and LG could be responsible for the production of OLED screens for the iPhone, as sources with knowledge of the matter previously hinted that Apple was already in talks with a number of involved parties.
