Apple is working on bringing a smaller iPhone to the market, and according to reports that surfaced in the last few weeks, its launch could take place in March.

But according to Chinese website MyDrivers, who has allegedly obtained the spec sheet of the new device, the upcoming iPhone 6c (or 7c as some speculate it could be called) might be more of a smaller version of the existing 6s.

First and foremost, let's the see the specs.

The new iPhone will come with a 4-inch display and a resolution of 1136x640 pixels, and will be powered by Apple's A9 chipset, the same one that's being used on the iPhone 6s right now. At the same time, it will feature 2 GB of RAM and a 1,642 mAh battery, again very close to the specs of the current 4.7-inch model, which boasts 2 GB of RAM and 1,715 mAh battery.

The display size and the screen resolution are identical to those of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c though, so it's very clear that Apple wants to expand its product portfolio with devices that have already proved to be successful for customers looking for a 4-inch phone.

A 4-inch display

Studies have shown that nearly 20 percent of the smartphone buyers would purchase a 4-inch device and that's one of the reasons Apple seems to be going in this new direction. Although the company does not expect the new iPhone to sell better than its flagship models, it does hope to see iOS usage on the rise, while at the same time boosting adoption of Apple Pay in the United States.

The smaller iPhone will indeed lack some capabilities as compared to the high-end models, including 3D Touch for instance, which will remain a feature exclusively available on the top versions, but will still come with NFC to support Apple Pay.

People with knowledge of Apple's plans previously hinted that the company wants the iPhone 6c to be made of metal and be available in several colors, just like the 5c.

The aforementioned source also has some information regarding pricing, with the cheapest model to cost $615 (565 EUR) with 16 GB of storage. Previous reports indicated that pricing of the new range could start at $400 (370 EUR).
