On September 9, during the "Hey Siri" keynote, Apple unveiled their new Apple TV, a completely revamped device both on the inside and the outside.

Besides a slightly changed box case and a new Apple Remote dubbed Siri Remote because it helps users tell their Apple TV exactly what they want to watch, this device also comes with a completely new operating system, with an iOS 9 core named tvOS.

Although the name was not a surprise, as there were people who had correctly predicted it before the event using the watchOS name as a source of inspiration, the rest of Apple's tvOS features were mostly rumors.

It unifies entertainment and productivity

As revealed by the Cupertino company during the September 9 keynote, tvOS was designed from the ground up to make it possible for Apple TV users to finally have a complete experience, unifying multimedia, multiplayer gaming, productivity and many others under the same umbrella with the help of an inbuilt App Store, specially designed for the new Apple TV.

As Apple declared, tvOS is an innovative TV platform designed to rethink everything one can do in a living room, and the Apple TV App Store is the main hub for delivering apps capable of doing all that and more.

tvOS also makes the connection between the new Apple TV and the improved Apple Remote, which allows users to control the device using their voice or with Touch surface gestures and to play games just as they would using a Nintendo Wii.

Developers already have all the tools needed to create new apps and games for the new Apple TV

Moreover, the apps and games available through tvOS, coupled with the upgraded hardware specs of the Apple TV and a large screen TV, should make the new $149 device the core of the living room in every Apple customer's house after its release in late October.

Apple has already published a detailed app Programming Guide for tvOS developers, designed to help them learn how to build Apple TV apps using the just-released tvOS SDK Beta, which makes it possible to take advantage of the powerful technologies and frameworks available in the latest iOS release to create their own apps and games.
