Apple said to be looking to build a smaller iPhone

People familiar with the matter claim Apple is currently working not only on the upcoming iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus but also on a smaller model that could hit the market as iPhone 7c.

Details are very vague right now, but there's a new report coming from Japanese website Macotakara, which claims that Apple's not necessarily working on a more affordable iPhone model, but on an iPhone 5s successor.

The idea is as simple as it could be: the upcoming model could come with similar dimensions, which once again proves that Apple wants a smaller iPhone on the market, but also with decent specs, such as an A8 chip, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and FaceTime camera. The fact that an A8 is being considered is also another sign that the fruity-named firm wants a device that's a little less expensive.

iPhone 5s came with a 4-inch screen, Apple's A7 processor, 1 GB of RAM, and up to 64 GB of storage. An 8-megapixel camera was featured on the back while a secondary 1.2-megapixel unit was used for FaceTime calls.

Possible launch in mid-2016

Apple used to launch new iPhone versions in the fall, but people familiar with the company's plans claim a change is now possible, especially because new models are also in the works.

The Cupertino-based firm is believed to be planning the launch of iPhone 7 lineup by mid-2016, which means that it might arrive in June, with sales to officially start the following month. The second-generation Apple Watch is also expected at about the same time, so Apple might actually want to mix the release of its new devices into one single event.

Of course, there are lots of unknown details until now, but so far, all signs point to an earlier release of the iPhone 7 lineup, which is likely to include a smaller model as well.
