On July 22, Arne Exton, the developer of several GNU/Linux and Android-x86 distributions, announced that he updated his Android-x86 KitKat 4.4.4 distro to build 7, a release that brings Linux kernel 4.0.8, Mesa 10.5.9, and other goodies.

According to Mr. Exton, the new version of the Android-x86 KitKat 4.4.4 distribution is a total rebuild, which fixes Bluetooth, updates the Mesa 3D Graphics Library package to improve the graphic performance of the system, and updates the kernel packages to 4.0.8-exton-android-x86, based on the upstream Linux 4.0.8 kernel.

Additionally, the Mesa 10.5.9 package enables hardware acceleration for Nvidia graphics cards by including the latest Nouveau video driver, as well as for VMWare virtual environments through the vmwgfx driver. Also, the GAPPS (Google Apps) package has been added, which includes apps like Google Play Store, YouTube, Google Play Services, Google Maps, etc.

"Android-x86 KitKat 4.4.4 Exton build 150721, version 7, is a total rebuild," says Arne Exton. "I’ve added Mesa (3D Graphics Library) 10.5.9 for better graphic performance. It has enabled hardware acceleration for Nvidia (Nouveau) and VMware (vmwgfx). The system can run live (from CD or a USB stick) on almost all laptops (and some Desktop computers)."

Android-x86 KitKat 4.4.4 Build 7 costs $9 (€8)

The Android-x86 KitKat 4.4.4 Build 7 operating system is available for purchase for the sum of $9 (€8) from the developer's website. It is distributed as a hybrid-ISO image that you can write on either a USB flash drive or a DVD disc and use it to boot the distro from the BIOS of numerous laptops and desktop computers.

We're reminding those of you who don't want to pay for this Android-x86 operating system that you can always download for free the original Android-x86 distro from Softpedia, which has recently been updated with almost the same features present in the project showcased on this article.
