The final release of openSUSE Leap 42.1 arrives next month

The openSUSE community, through Douglas DeMaio, has announced earlier today, October 15, 2015, the immediate availability for download and testing of the RC (Release Candidate) build of the forthcoming openSUSE Leap 42.1 operating system.

Powered by the latest long-term support Linux 4.1.10 kernel, OpenSuSE Leap 42.1 Release Candidate upgrades the open-source office suite package to LibreOffice 5.0, adds approximately 400 new packages that were not available in the Beta build, and contains numerous community packages that have been built based on the source code of the SUSE Linux Enterprise (SLE) operating system.

According to the openSUSE developers, the Leap edition of the openSUSE distribution will not contain all the latest software versions that are being released all the time, and that users who want a bleeding-edge operating system should move to the Tumbleweed rolling-release edition of the project. The ultimate goal for openSUSE Leap is to be an elegant, reliable, and very stable Linux OS.

"The Release Candidate (RC1) of Leap 42.1 is out and with it comes more packages as well as a new office suite," said Douglas DeMaio. "Leap is less about the newest updates, which is the purpose of Tumbleweed and its frequent snapshots; Leap is more about relevance and purposeful updates and packages that provide users prolonged, stable and enterprise-level functionality."

openSUSE Leap 42.1 Goldmaster comes on October 30

The development cycle of the openSUSE Leap 42.1 ends with this first and only Release Candidate build. The final version of the operating system will be unveiled in approximately three weeks from today, on November 4, 2015, during the annual SUSECon conference that will take place between November 2-6 at Beurs van Berlage in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Until then, there will be an internal Goldmaster build of openSUSE Leap 42.1 available at the end of the month, on October 30, and you can download today's openSUSE Leap 42.1 Release Candidate right now from Softpedia. Please try to keep in mind, though, that this is a pre-release version, and that it contains around 70 known issues that will be fixed until the final release.
