The OpenMandriva community, through Kate Lebedeff, has had the great pleasure of announcing the immediate availability for download of the OpenMandriva Lx 2014.2 Linux operating system.

Dubbed "The Scion," OpenMandriva Lx 2014.2 is a major release that adds support for booting the Live DVD ISO image on any UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) machine, allowing users to select the EFI System partition (ESP) on which to install the OpenMandriva operating system. Additionally, it is now possible to install OpenMandriva on a GUID Partition Table (GPT) partitioned disk drive in BIOS mode by creating a BIOS boot partition.

On the desktop side of things, OpenMandriva Lx 2014.2 updates the welcome screen, which is a very good starting point for new OpenMandriva users, updates the entire multimedia stack, including several multimedia apps and codecs, updates the X.Org Server and Mesa packages to version 1.15.2 and 10.4.7, respectively, and adds better printing support, especially for the latest HP printers.

“I read a lot of sad comments on Twitter about it (the loss of Mandriva) and realized that few of those guys seemed to be aware that actually Mandriva, the company, wasn’t doing a Linux distribution anymore for several years. The Mandriva Linux distribution, which earlier forked as PCLinuxOS, Mageia, and others, is now OpenMandriva,” says Gaël Duval, founder of Mandrake.

KDE 4.14.3 is still the default desktop environment

OpenMandriva Lx 2014.2 is using the KDE 4.14.3 desktop environment by default and includes up-to-date open-source software like the LibreOffice 4.4.3 office suite, the Mozilla Firefox 38.0 web browser, Java 7 Runtime Environment, as well as Linux kernel 3.18.16 LTS, which has been patched with nrj and QL for the best desktop performance.

Download OpenMandriva Lx 2014.2 right now via Softpedia or directly from the distribution's website, where you will find Live DVD ISO images for both 32- and 64-bit computers. More details about the new major version of the OpenMandriva Lx operating system can be found in the official announcement, which also includes a tutorial that will help you upgrade your existing OpenMandriva Lx 2014.1 installation.
