14 DAY TRIAL // Unvanquished is one of the few free, open-source first-person shooters that are still available for Linux users. A new Alpha release was made by developers, and it looks like the game is finally coming together.
It feels like Unvanquished has been under development forever, but the developers are actually making good headway with the game. The changelog for each new version is getting smaller and smaller, and that's a good thing. Now they can focus more on fixing the existing bugs and on improving the engine.
This game is actually one of the few free FPS games that are still developed and maintained. Just a few years ago there were only a handful of these titles around, but the gaming landscape has changed tremendously, and it's getting more and more difficult for this kind of titles to be successful and to get lots of fans.
Unvanquished Alpha 46 is now ready for download
Besides all the cool stuff that's been added in this latest build, including a sweet new flamethrower, the developers have also implemented an update for the game, so that people won't have to do this kind of work manually each time a new version comes out.
"The updater runs off Qt and is cross-platform, and it should be fairly easy for websites and package maintainers to distribute since it wouldn’t be released monthly. Our goal with the updater is that you would just download that once, and use that to get the latest released version of the game," the developers said in their regular announcement.
They also said that they are dropping SourceForge as the main source for downloads and will move to GitHub. The rest of the files are coming from a torrent host.
