14 DAY TRIAL // Today, Frank Karlitschek, founder, maintainer, and CTO of ownCloud, has teased users on Twitter with a download link for the first Beta build of the upcoming ownCloud 9 self-hosting cloud server.
Frank Karlitschek was the one to state on Twitter a while ago that ownCloud 9 would be a cool release, so we were intrigued by the download link posted today for the Beta 1 build, and we searched the project's website for some details on the new features.
While we couldn't find anything there, all we needed was the source archive. And so, we've discovered some of the awesome features that will be implemented in the upcoming ownCloud 9 Server release, and we would love to share them here with you.
What’s new for users in ownCloud 9.0, you may ask? Well, the highlights of this major release include the ability to see which group you belong to in your Personal page, as well as the addition of a new sidebar to the File app for showing file info.
Also in the Files app, there's now a file upload action in the "New" menu. Moreover, the Pictures app has been completely rewritten and renamed as Gallery, and federated shares are now displayed on your “Shared with you” tab.
Search improvements, Web interface enhancements, and a lot more cool new features
In addition to the new features mentioned above, ownCloud 9 will reset the password tokens after 12 hours, the ownCloud Desktop client lets users share files directly from their operating system's file manager, and you can now assign a favorite icon to files and folders.
ownCloud 9 will improve the federated cloud sharing feature introduced in ownCloud 7 as Server-to-Server sharing to allow users to mount file share from remote ownCloud servers, the performance of the download broker, and the search interface, which has been simplified and streamlined.
Last but not least, the Web interface has received some much-needed enhancements as well in this first Beta build of ownCloud 9.0, making it a lot easier for users to access, share, edit, and sync their files.
