OurMine launches 117 Gbps DDOS on 9 financial institutions

OurMine Team, a group of hackers from Saudi Arabia, have been at the source of several DDOS attacks on several financial institutions in the last few days.

According to Akamai, which was first to notice the DDOS, "the largest attack exceeded over 117 Gbps of peak bandwidth," but "no outages have been reported from the major institutions."

"We can confirm a total of 9 financial institutions [that] were targeted on the opening day of this operation," said Akamai's Bill Brenner.

In Akamai's investigation, the group seems to be new on the scene, and initially started out hacking YouTube, Skype, PayPal, Minecraft, Xbox Live, PlayStation, and TheHiveMC (Minecraft forum) accounts.

A Reddit thread details their early beginnings, and the Akamai blog post also reveals how at one point OurMine Team members requested aid via HackForums in hacking Instagram accounts.

As OurMine Team acquired more skills, the group seems to have moved on to carrying out DDOS attacks on Minecraft servers, STC (Saudi Telecom Company), and even SoundCloud (in a deleted tweet).

Akamai investigators have asked Flashpoint analysts for a review of the group, which concluded that "while the group itself is likely comprised of unskilled actors, it is still believed to be credible" thanks to its Twitter account where it generally delivers on its promises.
