It takes awhile to get everything into place

The new OTA update for Ubuntu Touch is almost here, but developers still need to work in order to fix all the problems. Some issues have been recently discovered, and the launch has been pushed back for few days, but it looks like we might get it this week.

Canonical recently switched to a six-week release cycle for the OTA (over the air) updates for the Ubuntu phones, and it seems to have paid off. Developers are no longer rushing to get everything done before the landing gates are closing, and there is more time for testing. It didn't stop them from delaying the release for a few days, but they had a good reason to do that.

Each release of Ubuntu Touch or a new update is tested thoroughly, and developers have a put together an automated testing system that insures that no important bug goes through the crack. It doesn't guarantee that no bugs go through, just that nothing major can happen.

OTA-6 for Ubuntu is almost here

Each new update released by Canonical needs to be tested by the phone makers, so it will also go through the hands of people from BQ and Meizu, which is basically another layer of testing. If any of them find any issues, then we won't see a release this week.

"The current best-case scenario is: final image available and tested around Monday EOD and then handed over to BQ. This would possibly move the final image release date to somewhere around Thursday. We will also need help from translators on new strings in the trust-store and pulseaudio projects - once the new templates are ready and imported by launchpad of course," wrote Canonical's  Łukasz 'sil2100' Zemczak.

We also saw that some Meizu MX4 users are confused about the version that shows up in their OS. Meizu phones get the same version as everyone else, just the numbering is different.
