Still unofficial, still likely to get banned by Snapchat

Even though Snapchat has no intention of bringing an official client on Windows Phone/Windows 10 Mobile, developers coding for the platform keep trying to build their own third-party apps, hoping they could escape unbanned after the release in the store.

This is the case of a new app called Specter, which comes with rather basic functionality, but it’s pretty much the best you can get in terms of Snapchat at the moment.

As WMPU notes, it’s still work in progress and integrates only a handful of options, such as the possibility of logging in with a Snapchat account and receiving all types of messages, including text, image, and video. On the other hand, Specter users can only send images for now, with video likely to be added at a later time if the app isn’t removed in the meanwhile.

What it’s also worth knowing is that Snapchat previously banned some of the accounts that were connecting to the service with a third-party app, so using Specter could have the same result. Certainly, this is a risky experiment, but without any other way to connect to Snapchat, it might still be worth it.

“Snapchat hates Microsoft”

As for the reason no official Snapchat client is available for Windows Phone, well-known app developer Rudy Huyn has said earlier this year that it’s all because the company hates Microsoft and it’ll do everything to remove any app from the store.

“They don’t care. They hate Microsoft and will do everything to kill you,” he has stressed while also adding that third-party clients won’t survive for long in the Windows Store.

“Whatever the API you use, Snapchat’s lawyer will send you a mail, don’t lose your time. Remember one thing: there is a lot of Snapchat third-party apps on Android/iOS, but they send lawyers to WP only. Sideloading is not an option.”

At this point, Specter might be worth a try if you’re ready to take the risk, but it’ll be interesting to see if Snapchat indeed decides to remove it or not.
