The awesome folks behind the open-source and cross-platform MPV video player software have announced the release of MPV 0.13.0 for all supported operating systems, including GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows.

According to the release notes, which we've attached at the end of the article for reference, MPV 0.13.0 is a decent release that adds a few new features and introduces a couple of new options and commands. Moreover, it changes several other options and commands and fixes many of the issues reported by users since the previous release of the software, MPV 0.12.0.

Among the most significant changes, it's worth paying attention to the addition of an SVG version of the application's icon, multivolume support in stream_libarchive, as well as the implementation of a prescaling framework, besides NNEDI3 and Super-xBR. Among the newly added options and commands, we can mention the mistimed-frame-count property and vsync-fences option.

"The previous release changed the default format for youtube-dl and removed some workarounds related to MPEG DASH support. However, the required changes to FFMpeg code are not in any FFmpeg release yet (as of 2015-11-10), so for now, playing DASH streams requires using FFmpeg git master. You can work around this by using the --ytdl-format=best option," reads the announcement.

Minor enhancements and bug fixes

MPV 0.13.0 makes the display-fps property writable, no longer loads the VAAPI (Video Acceleration API) GLX interop by default, disables drm-egl autopickup by default, renames "drm_egl" to "drm-egl" and "fancy-downscaling" to "correct-downscaling," enables correct-downscaling for anamorphic strems too, and enables MPEG2 hardware decoding by default when requested.

There are also various other minor enhancements and bug fixes in MPV 0.13.0, among which we can mention multiple display-sync improvements, support for displaying the OSD (On-Screen Display) in audio-only mode, correct playback of pal8 files, support for MPEG2 codecs, and better 7.1 audio support over HDMI.
