On March 26, 2016, Moritz Bunkus had the pleasure of announcing the release and immediate availability for download of MKVToolNix 9.0.0, the newest, most advanced and stable branch of the open-source MKV (Matroska) manipulation software.

According to the announcement published by Mr. Bunkus on March 26, 2016, MKVToolNix 9.0.0 is massive release that introduces a significant number of new features, starting with a regression introduced in version 8.7.0, related to the HEVC handler, which wasn't capable of dropping some SEI NALUs.

Another interesting change implemented in MKVToolNix 9.0.0 is the ability for the mkvinfo component to launch with its graphical user interface (GUI) on the Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows operating systems, by default. Of course, this can be overridden by adding the "--no-gui" flag to the command.

"Users of these two OSes often start mkvinfo by clicking on the executable instead of using start menu entries making adding the parameter '--gui' somewhat difficult. The behavior for other OSes has not been changed," said Moritz Bunkus. "There were tons of bug fixes all over the place."

mkvmerge gains new capabilities

Besides the goodies mentioned above, MKVToolNix 9.0.0 ships today with an updated mkvmerge component, which is now capable of automatically generating chapters every time a new file is being added to it, as well as at fixed intervals. Both features can be enabled from the graphical user interface.

Among other interesting things added to the open-source MKVToolNix software, we would like to mention a man-page and a Korean translation. Below, we've attached the entire changelog in case you're curious to know what exactly has been changed. In the meantime, you can download MKVToolNix 9.0.0 for GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows right now from our website.
