14 DAY TRIAL // MKVToolNix 8.8.0 has been released today, January 10, and it comes only one week after the announcement of MKVToolNix 8.7.0, as Moritz Bunkus has informed us earlier on the project's website.
According to the internal changelog, which we have attached at the end of the article for reference, MKVToolNix 8.8.0 is mostly a bugfix release patching a regression introduced in MKVToolNix 8.7.0, which made the mkvmerge component crash, thus leading the software's GUI to report that the mkvmerge executable couldn’t be found.
The issue was caused by a bug in the code for the TrueHD detection functionality, which incorrectly detected certain video files in various formats, including H.264/AVC, MPEG-2 and DTS, as TrueHD ones, which, in fact, they weren't. This issue has now been corrected in MKVToolNix 8.8.0, so users need to update as soon as possible.
"Only ten days since 8.7.0, but a lot of users are hitting a regression in 8.7.0 that makes mkvmerge crash," says Moritz Bunkus in today's announcement. "The underlying cause is a bug in the TrueHD detection code wrongfully thinking a file is indeed a TrueHD file while it actually isn’t - e.g. it’s happened with MPEG 2 video files, DTS files, h.264/AVC files etc."
MKVToolNix GUI improvements, mkvmerge bugfixes
Of course, that's not the only thing that has been implemented in today's release of MKVToolNix, as the developer has also added several improvements to the MKVToolNix GUI component, the software's graphical user interface, and has fixed a few other bugs for the mkvmerge and mkvpropedit components.
