MKVToolNix's Moritz Bunkus has introduced the fourth maintenance release of the MKVToolNix 8.x series, the most advanced, open-source, and cross-platform MKV (Matroska) manipulation software on the market.

According to the internal changelog, which we've attached at the end of the article for reference, we can notice that MKVToolNix 8.4.0 brings even more new and attractive features to the software's graphical user interface, MKVToolNix GUI, but also fixes many of those annoying issues that users reported since the previous maintenance release of the software.

Among the most important ones, we can mention the ability to set more options to the merge tool when dragging and dropping files, the implementation of a new option in the dialog that appears when the user drags and drops files onto merge settings, allowing them to create one new merge tab, as well as the addition of basic track properties into the Tracks tree view.

Furthermore, MKVToolNix GUI has received a new column in the Track list, which will display the effective state of the "default track" flag, and one in the Chapter Editor, which displays the chapter’s or edition’s flags. Users can now reset the state of all columns in the tree and list views, as well as reorder column headers of all list and tree views using the drag and drop functionality (their position will be restored after a restart).

The mkvmerge tool has received some attention too

In addition to all the cool new features implemented in the MKVToolNix GUI component, MKVToolNix 8.4.0 adds numerous improvements to the mkvmerge tool, such as the ability to output the timecode of garbage data's appearance when processing MP3 and AC3 audio tracks, along with support for sorting the output of track and container properties.

All MKVToolNix users are being informed that the entire support for the wxWidgets toolkit has been removed, which means that the mkvinfo component will only support the Qt-based and CLI interfaces, and that the mkvmerge GUI (mmg) component has been removed.
