Phil Spencer, the leader of the Xbox gaming division inside Microsoft, is saying that he is convinced that the rival PlayStation 4 home console will soon receive an announcement about a price cut that might be implemented before the holiday season.

The executive is quoted by IGN as saying that "I fully expect they will drop price. When I think about the playbook they've used in the past, we feel good about the plans we have in place going forward in the holiday. If history tells, then we'll see a price drop from them coming."

Spencer seems to believe that Sony will make an official announcement during the coming Paris Games Week, where the company is set to have a big presence and will hold a press conference.

The Microsoft executive also makes it clear that both he and the company he works for are interested in a competitive market that gives gamers options because it makes the entire industry healthier in the long term.

The Xbox One is the console that has dropped the price since it was first introduced, with Microsoft saying that it adjusted its stance to make sure that the platform reached as many customers as possible.

Christmas is very important for both gaming platforms

It's somewhat weird to hear Microsoft talking about the future of the PlayStation 4 when it comes to price and Sony has always maintained that the price of its home console reflects the value that it delivers to gamers.

The official line is that the PS4 will not be getting a reduction in price any time soon and that more firmware updates and other initiatives will be used to improve the overall user experience.

For the crucial holiday shopping season, Microsoft is relying on a chain of exclusive launches to boost overall sales of the Xbox One and a new user interface is also coming to the device.

The biggest title to arrive is Halo 5: Guardians, which is the first Master Chief adventure designed for the home console.

Meanwhile, the PlayStation 4 will receive extra content linked to major games like Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 and Assassin's Creed: Syndicate.

At the moment, the Sony device is the leader in terms of sales both worldwide and in the United States, and it's unclear how a PS4 price cut will affect the dynamic of the two platforms.
